ATHLETICS 1972

By Mr P. Gibson

1972 proved to be an extremely successful season for the school, both from the point of view of individual results and team performances. Nine new school records were set and seven trophies won.

In the Senior Team, N. Wade lowered the school 400m. record to 51.1 secs, C. Szelewski, the Team Captain threw 114'10" with the 14K discus and S. Pinsent threw the Senior Hammer 161'3" and was this year's A.A.A. Southern Counties Champion.

The team won the Borough Cup, the 1913 Group Shield and the Bowles and Twickenham cups. This was achieved by team effort and there was an excellent spirit in the side. Our Senior Relay team of C. Elias, D. Crombie, D. Cox and N. Wade won the Borough Road Schools' Invitation Relay and in a similar event at Loughborough were narrowly beaten in the final by Northampton G.S.

The Intermediate team won no major honours but produced some good supporting team performances. As the team consisted largely of 4th year boys, next season should see a marked improvement in their results, especially in view of the fact that they will be strengthened by this year's excellent Junior team.

It was the Junior team that for the first time in the School's history won the 1913 Finals' Meeting. They also won the Sherrington Trophy and Borough cup. The team was a very strong one indeed as evidenced by the following new school records:-

100 M 12.0 secs S. Drake
400 M 56.1 secs R. Wilford
800 M 2 M. 14.1 secs D. Putt
80 M Hurdles 12.2 secs P. Darrell
1 1/4K Discus 109'9" A. Essex
4 x 100 M. Relay 49.2 secs R. Ettinger, S. Drake, N. Owen and P. Darrell.

In conclusion special mention should be made of P. Darrell who, apart from the record above, won a second place medal in the County Schools Championships and gained 4th place in the All England Schools' Finals at Washington, County Durham.
