Music Notes (1972-73)

RECITAL ST. EDMUND'S NORTHWOOD HILLS 5 JULY 1973

This recital commenced with the Oboe Concerto by Cimarosa (Soloist Elizabeth Mills) and the first half included the 10th Organ Concerto by Handel.

The main work of the recital was The Midnight Mass for Christmas Eve by Charpentier, performed by the augmented Madrigal Group, the Senior Orchestra, and David Heath (Organ). The performance was enthusiastically received and the movement repeated as an encore.

INFORMAL CONCERT 10th JULY 1973

This was made up of solo items performed by S. Poulton (Piano), D. Heath (Piano), P. Massey (Trumpet), P. Meulien (Horn), D. Mercer (Tenor), M. Evans (Flute) and S. Buckley (Cello). The Headmaster, accompanied by Mr. Smith, performed movements from César Franck's Violin Sonata.

CHRISTMAS SERVICE 13th DECEMBER 1972

This service included the Senior Orchestra for the first time, and the whole 1st and 2nd form were present, singing Bach's "Zion hears her watchman's voices''.

SUMMER CONCERT 23rd MAY 1972

The first part of this concert was given by the junior school, including items by the junior orchestra, and the trebles choir, a piano solo by D. Arthur and the whole first form singing a selection from "Oliver''.

In the second part of the concert there were solo items by S. Poulton (Piano), G. Hartwell (Piano), M. Evans (Flute), P. Meulien (Horn), D. Mercer (Tenor). The Madrigal. Group performed works by Arcadelt, de Sermisy, and N. Stone. A Clarinet quartet performed a scherzo by Beethoven and a Wind Octet played the Allegro K.388 by Mozart. The Senior orchestra played works by Vaughan Williams, Brahms and Walton.
