ATHLETICS 1975

By Mr. A. Kerr

Seniors

We had various disappointments this season with the changeable weather and it was a great pity that rain caused the Borough Athletics meeting to be cancelled.

Still, our Seniors, although not being as strong as they have been in the past, have competed fairly well. They came first in the 1913 North West Group meeting, and in the Finals of that meeting came Second. Ably supported by our Junior and Intermediate athletics in the North West Group Meeting, we won the Overall trophy for the thirteenth consecutive time.

At the individual level J. Middleton proved to be a good 100 metres runner. Barber ran well to come second in the 1913 Finals in the 200 metres in a time of 24.5 seconds.

Thanks are due to the other athletes who turned out regularly and at times put in some very creditable performances: D. Putt, G. Wood, P. Stockwell, M. Blake, A. McClelland, M. Dane, P. Ettinger, N. Thomson, G. Hadwin and P. Darrell.

P. Darrell had a very successful season. He equalled the Middlesex Schools 110m. Hurdles record in a time of 15.2 seconds: and once again he was selected by Middlesex to represent them over this distance at the All England Championships. He was awarded the trophy for the Best Track Performance in our own St. Nicholas Shield Meeting, and was the only Senior Athlete to be awarded Full Colours.

Intermediate

This team competed well, and was fortunate in having several athletes who achieved a very high level of performance. Still, it was the team work that enabled the side to finish at the top in the North West Group meeting.

D. Darrell was Borough Champion over the 100m. Hurdles in a time of 15.0 seconds. He was also the 1913 North West Group Champion and came second in the final of the 1913. He raced over the 400m hurdles in the Senior St. Nicholas Shield Meeting and, running as a second string, won the event in a record time of 60.7 seconds.

M. Stephens cleared 2m 70 in the Pole Vault, and was Borough Champion and North West Group Champion. He was sixth in the 1913 Finals.

G. Hills gave excellent competition to Stephens and himself cleared 2m. 60. Also worthy of mention is C. Orlan's 100m. run in the 1913 Group meeting where he came second.

The team also won our own Sherrington Trophy for Second, Third and Fourth Years.

Britton, Wignall, Hudspeth, Norris, Blundell, Henley, N. Jones, Earwood, I. Rice, Tinsley and Marsh all competed regularly.

Juniors

This is potentially a very strong team. Its strength stemmed from its excellent reserves who worked very well for the side. Mason was a competent 100m. runner and Javelin thrower, and a good captain.

McKenzie, on switching to the 80m. Hurdles late in the season, ran a very good 12.5 second race.

Gross, apart from Triple Jumping 11m. 30 and Long Jumping 5m. 09, both good performances, looked very promising as a 400m. runner, his best time being 58.5 seconds.

Shammas worked hard to run a very good 26.5 second 200 metres, as did Johnson who ran the 800 metres in 2m 19.3 seconds, and 1500 metres in 4 mins 45. seconds.

Taylor high jumped an excellent 1m 54 and Thomas and Stone pole vaulted very well: Thomas clearing 2m. 30 and Stone 2m. 53.

Froud, Thomas, Stone, Taylor, Mount, Day, Shammas, Hutton and Simmons deserve special mention as they were Second Years competing at Under Fifteen level. Junior Colours were awarded to: Mason, McKenzie, Gross, Johnson and Cornwell.

First Year

Our First Year Inter Form Athletics competition was of a very high standard this year. Practically every first year boy competed in at least one event.

1A. came first with 327 points: 1B second with 317 points, 1C third with 310 points.

We also had a very close match with Northwood School, which we lost by 154 1⁄2 points to 136 1⁄2. Rance in the Discus, Porterfield in the High Jump, Sarratt in the Hurdles and Long Jump, and Newport in the Shot won their events.

In the Borough Championships the team did well to come third. Sarratt won the 70m. Hurdles in the record time of 12.3 seconds and Jungreuthmayer won the High Jump with the record height of 1m. 40.
