BADMINTON REPORT 1969-70

By Ian Summerhayes

This year the school produced one of the strongest badminton sides yet and their success during the season reflects the standard of play attained, losing only 3 matches from 13. The school entered for two badminton leagues; the West London League Badminton title again eluded us and it was Watford Grammar School who proved to be our downfall, whilst losing to a strong Harrow side prevented us from continuing through to the semi-finals of the Middlesex Badminton League.

Summerhayes, the captain, partnered by Infante, were slow starters and this cost them unnecessary defeat in a few of their games. However, they had a good understanding by the end of the season. Smith, one of the younger members of the team, showed great speed and skill about court and appeared to have no weakness in his armour. He was partnered by Ransley, another promising young player who showed marked improvement throughout the season. The team's last pair saw several changes during the season but finally Warby and Booth established a partnership and their enthusiasm made up for their lack of finesse during the games,

Smith's prowess at the game gained him success outside of school activities. He and his partner won the Middlesex under sixteen doubles and he visited Denmark with the Middlesex Schools team,

The success of this season's young team augurs well for the future.
