The school, in its first season of 1st XI Cricket, was unfortunately hampered by an almost complete lack of facilities for practice. Taking this into consideration, the 1st XI, led by Payne, performed quite creditably against other schools. The two wins obtained were particularly exciting. Both followed a similar pattern, Payne, on one occasion in partnership with Loveday, pointing the way towards victory, and Harris confirming it in cavalier fashion.

Payne's batting was consistent, but he did not have nearly enough support from the rest of the team. In the same way, the responsibility for dismissing the opposition rested far too heavily on the shoulders of Johnston. Lake and Lawson had occasional success, but neither has yet developed the required accuracy. Samways has generally shown more promise with the ball than the bat this season, but he could soon develop into a very useful all-rounder.

Next season we should have the practice nets ready, and we will have the opportunity of remedying the shortcomings evident in the match against the staff.

The play of the 2nd XI did not reach a very high standard. After two heavy defeats, the team was encouraged by some good bowling by Delacamp, who took six wickets for 10 runs against Ealing, and by Lawson, who found form with the bat against Rickmansworth,

With Jackson, the Captain, showing good form with the bat, supported by good bowling from Wormald and Samways, the team was only beaten once during a most satisfactory season. The high- light of the season was perhaps four wickets in four balls, all bowled by Samways at Borehamwood. Let us hope that the promise shown this year will develop into 1st XI material next year.

The Junior XI improved as the season progressed, and a number of boys produced useful all-round performances. Shepperd and Wall were the most effective batsmen, and the latter, with the Captain, Chambers N., bowled consistently well. Junior Colours were awarded to Chambers N., Shepperd and Wall.

Match abandoned.

After opening the season in a disastrous fashion against Kings- bury, being dismissed for 7, the side gained some confidence, and their play improved. This was reflected in better performances against Watford, though a premature declaration caused a possibly unnecessary defeat. The bowling generally has plenty of variety, but needs to be backed up by some much livelier fielding and tighter field placing. The batting is very weak, and only Wooding seems to remember to play with his head over the line of the ball; the remainder merely swing and hope! Wooding had his reward when he batted unbeaten through the entire innings against Rickmansworth, and finished the game with a grand six.

Here one must single out for special mention the mature batting and promising leg-spin bowling of Speck, the Captain. He has done much, by his example, to inspire the rest of the side, and must take much of the credit for the defeat of Watford this season. Indeed, this last game was, in the opinion of the umpires, the most exciting school match they had witnessed for many a long day. Coath. Lucas and Cook made noticeable improvements during the season,
