Hockey Report 1968-69

By Mr. R. Clayton

Hockey suffers worse from bad weather than most outdoor winter sports since a firm, even surface is essential for play. This season we had appalling weather conditions for most of the time and match after match had to be cancelled, practices took place almost invariably on the playground, a match against the Old Boys which had been envisaged never took place and the Inter-House competition had to be cancelled.

It is not surprising that when the team did manage to play matches they were not very succesful. Potential was never lacking and many players made great progress during the season, attaining a high standard of skill, but a team that has little match experience is liable to be an unco-ordinated team and this tended to be our major weakness.

It must, nevertheless, be said that enthusiasm and determination never waned in the team and those players who remain at school for the new season together with some very useful talent coming up into the fifth year should produce a strong (dare I say it!) winning team.
