Hockey Report 1973-74

By P. Dumville

The season was unexciting and fraught with defeats and "hard luck stories", and yet it contained a few highly promising moments. Many fixtures were cancelled and out of sixteen matches arranged only seven were played.

In our first game we came near to beating Windsor Grammar School, the eventual Berkshire champions, but we faded to lose 3-5. We narrowly lost to Hertford Grammar School but, in what was to be one of our best performances, we beat Salvatorian College convincingly, 5-0.

The loss of Neil Wade and Timothy Streeton, who left school during the season, weakened the side. We made asses of ourselves when we failed to beat our most attractive opponents (St. Mary's Grammar School) but our fighting spirit re- asserted itself against our strongest rivals, Burnham Grammar School. The team played extremely well in the second half and was only narrowly beaten, Burnham recording their sixteenth win of the season in what was only our seventh match.

Five fifth-formers played in the first XI and they promise well for next year, but the loss of Tim Robinson, our goalkeeper, will be hard to make up. More practice and more opposition are essential.
