Hockey Report 1972-73

By N. Wade

In the beginning there was the man who never was, and at the start of our season came the game that never was. We all piled into the mini-bus to go on Wade's Magical Mystery Tour to Slough Grammar School, to play a game that in reality did not exist. You will be pleased to note that we won this game in convincing fashion.

With the departure of much of the skill from last year's side, it was obvious that we had to base our efforts on team work, team spirit and a great deal of individual character. Much of the good midfield play came from lan Powell and Andy Kent and Neil Wade. Defensive mainstays were Phil 'Streeter' Logan, Colin Christy, and Tim Robinson in goal. As with most years our biggest problem was finding a suitable attack. We are most grateful to John Harper, Tim Streeton, Richard Wignall, and later on in the season to Dave 'Piltdown' Simmonds, who but for his temperament could have made a consistent 1st XI player. Other players worthy of note for their loyal services are Graham Henderson and Philip Dumville.

Matches in the main were hard fought 'sporting' contests, none more so than the match against Uxbridge Tech. which looked like being a free for all but for some stern umpiring.

This match resulted in a notable victory for the side. Most of the other matches were either drawn or lost owing mainly to our lack of ability or aggression in front of goal. I hope this fault can be rectified by next season. I feel that we must pay far more attention to team tactics and match play if the results are to improve.

Lastly I would like to thank Mr. Taylor and the staff for a most entertaining game to say the least.

The game against St. Mary's is also worthy of note if only for the above average display of talent by their side.

Colours to: I. Powell and N. Wade.
Half Colours to A. Kent.
