COLTS RUGBY TOUR TO YORKSHIRE 1967-68

By B. DIMMOCK, 4A

With the co-operation of Mr. Cahill and Mr. Samways the Colts were able to raise nearly £100 towards the cost of the tour.

The party of twenty boys, with Mr. Cahill and Mr. Samways, left on the 6th April. We travelled to Skipton in a brand-new coach skilfully piloted by Dave 'the rave', who was to become a very popular member of the party.

After an uneventful if somewhat rowdy journey we arrived at our hotel in Skipton. After dinner we surveyed the town for some signs of life.

Our first game was against Crossley and Porter School, Halifax. We lost 12-11. The score accurately reflects just how close the game was.

Mr. Samways decided that a bracing journey back to Skipton over the Pennines would do us good, especially those of us who were studying geography.

Our next game was against Heath Grammar School, Halifax. Unfortunately, the coach broke down. What a surprise they had when we arrived in the back of a lorry! However, the strain of this, a hard game the previous day and adventurous evenings took their toll - we lost 24-8. Somehow we summoned enough energy to spend the afternoon and evening in Leeds, where we spent most of the time trying to avoid hordes of marauding Glasgow Rangers supporters, in town for the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Mr. Samways' love of geography somewhat influenced Wednesday. We spent the whole day visiting Ingleborough Cave and Malham Cove. Wednesday evening was our last in Skipton.

Our last game was against Ermysted's Grammar School, Skipton. This was a vital game; we had to uphold the dignity of our team. The fact that Mr. Jefford, a former pupil of the School, was present spurred us on. We won 30-3. After a meal in a local hotel we left Skipton. It had been, in the words of the Headmaster, "a very successful tour".
