"In Print" offers a selection of poems written by boys during their work in English last year.
No one, least of all the writers themselves, would make any but the most modest claims about the quality of these poems; in any case the selection does not necessarily include only the best work, for the purpose is to cover as wide & range of subject and form as possible.
Poetry is often regarded with some suspicion by those who, lacking any strong desire to write, are yet obliged to try their hand at composing it. Perhaps one reason for this attitude is a too narrow definition of the word itself and a tendency to regard it as synonymous with verse.
In fact there is poetry in all art and in any pleasing expression of genuine emotion. However he chooses to present is work, the poet is an interpreter of the beauty around us; he makes us aware of its existence and nourishes our imaginations with ideas. He does his best to prevent us from becoming either robots or vegetables - both equally unsatisfactory states of existence in his opinion.
In this collection, poet is really anyone who has given us different view of familiar things or who has persuaded us to share momentarily an experience which to him has been important.
The attractive illustrations are the work or Clive Tickner we are most grateful for his help. We should also like to thank the Secretaries for typing the poems, a task not made easier by the somewhat eccentric writing of some contributors.
