Valves, crankshafts, carburettors, fans,
Combined together with familiar things
Such as nuts and bolts and piston rings,
In the mind of the inventor
Produce Mr. Marple's tormentor -

To wit, an internal combustion-engine,
Throbbing with life at the touch of ignition:
Gear box, clutch, and steering column,
Encased in coat, shiny and modern,
Should be sufficient egg-on or goad
For him to grant them miles more road.
