You stand erect upon the roof.
Your slim form silhouetted
Against the darkening evening sky.
Now the red sun has retreated.

On this and many evenings past
Much enjoyment you have brought,
Although you never will or can
Express alone a single thought.

There is no life in your slim form,
Tall, straight, and gaunt you stand
In attics, on roofs; all your kind
Bring men pleasure throughout the land.
