Rugby Reports 10
(1964-65)
(1964-65)
The outstanding individual achievement of the year was that of Graham Curd who gained the School's first International Cap: he played in the England Schoolboys (15 Group) Rugby XV on three occasions, against Wales at Twickenham (lost 0-5) and at Cardiff (won 8-0) and against Leicestershire (won 22-0). At Twickenham, Graham had very few opportunities to shine but at the Arms Park, where England gained one of their very rare victories at this level, he received some very good "write-ups" in the National Press. The School is very proud of his success; may he repeat it at Senior level in the future!

The 1st XV record was not up to the standard of previous years. The team did, however, include many young players who, although lacking in size and experience, more than held their own in the second term when more used to first team football standards.
Defeats by Wanstead and Hampton (twice) were by narrow margins and the fact that these matches were lost in the last fifteen minutes of the game is indicative of the team's lack of experience rather than of any deficiencies in fitness.
However, the season ended on a much brighter note with many of the younger players acquitting themselves very well, Nash and Lowe being particular examples. The Easter Tour to the Lake District provided superb attacking football by the team, the equal of anything produced in recent years. Heversham G.S. were beaten 21-3 and Kendal G.S. 24-5. Nash, Muxlow, Burrells, Lucas, Taylor and Jones being outstanding in both games. Muxlow, indeed, was the most improved player in the team, whilst Wooding and Parish, always prominent in the team, were selected to play for Middlesex.
J. Frankcom made a very good captain under difficult conditions; his play was always of the highest standard and my thanks go to him for all the hard work he put into the building of the team.
Finally, I should like to thank all members of the team for their regular attendance at practices and training sessions throughout the season. Their efforts in this respect were first-rate and it was a pity that they were not rewarded with more success.
School Colours were awarded to I. Jones, A. Muxlow, M. Parish and V. Wooding.

The 2nd XV, under Mr. P. Newton, had its most successful season, a fitting reward for all Mr. Newton's hard work over the years with School rugby. Everyone will wish him well in his new post.
The side remained unbeaten throughout, surrendering its 100 per cent record only in the last match of all.
