After six weeks of sedentary summer holiday, the prospective cross country runner is faced with the formidable task of preparing himself for the season ahead. A few weeks of regular, organised training under the watchful eye of a keen Mr. Cahill see the team taking shape. Training no longer seems as hard as before and this is the signal for the first test - a match against carefully selected opposition.
It is at this time of year, also, that Mr. Cahill, satisfied with a job well done, exchanges his shorts and spikes for a stop-watch and seat at the summit of Haste Hill, where - whenever staff-room commitments permit - he can be seen to yell fervent encouragement to his "boys".
The results produced during the season were not brilliant by the standard set in previous years but, objectively viewed, they weren't bad either. Three boys, Kerton, Gibson and I. Skinner, represented the County in the All-England Championships at Coventry; second place was gained in the 'Haskell' Cup race at Guildford which includes some of the best Cross Country schools in the south and we were inevitably - runners-up in the Middlesex Grammar Schools' race, again - inevitably - to Bishopshalt.
School colours were awarded to J. Darby, P. McGain and I. Skinner and Junior Colours to R. Jones.
